Concordia University's A Gala of Stars Salutes Art Linkletter and Raises $200,000 for Student Scholarships

Concordia University announced today that $200,000 was raised for student scholarships on Saturday's second annual "A Gala of Stars" musical extravaganza, benefit dinner and auction. Organized by the Friends of Concordia University, the university's largest fundraiser for student scholarships also served as an occasion to announce this year's recipients of the university's prestigious community service awards.
The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Emmy Award Winner Art Linkletter for entertaining families with his hit shows Kids Say the Darndest Things, House Party and People Are Funny. For more than 60 years, he has lifted America's spirits. He is the recipient of ten honorary doctorate degrees and has inspired thousands of audiences during his prolific speaking career.
The Servant Leadership Award was presented to Judy Sweeney of Newport Beach for her volunteer leadership in organizations such as Young Life, United Way of Orange County, Saint Joseph Ballet and the Orange County Performing Arts Center.
The Christus Mundo Award was presented to Dr. Marlin Schulz of Mission Viejo for his 45 years of service in Christian education. From 1981 to 1999, he served at Concordia University in nine different academic, leadership and development roles.
This year's "A Gala of Stars" was co-chaired by Ruth DeNault and Jane Olson. Among the 39 sponsors who contributed to the success of this event were Craig and Jane Olson, Aramark, Bon Appetit, Ruth DeNault, John Herklotz, the Ed Lohr Family, Law Offices of Pat Stacker, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Neil and June Ash, Tom and Margie Gephart, Golden State Foods, John Graham & Associates, Bob and Kari Grimm and Paul and Elayne Lohr, Key Bank, and Jim and Debbie Klein.
Television personality, Stephanie Edwards was the evening's mistress of ceremonies. Over 400 guests were entertained by Concordia student and alumni performers singing and dancing to big band hits of the 1940s. The one hour musical set, "The Fabulous Forties," was directed by Michael Shackelford '90, '98 M.A. and Rob Blaney '92.
